Agentic commerce, in plain terms
Three words, three different roles:
- An AI agent is an assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot) able to act through several steps on a user's behalf, not just answer a question.
- Agentic commerce is that agent being used inside a shopping journey: searching for a product, comparing stores, reading reviews, sometimes placing an order.
- Protocols (ACP, UCP, AP2) are the technical languages that let these agents talk directly to online stores: read a catalogue, check stock, trigger a payment.
For a small business, the point is not mastering these acronyms. It is knowing at which step AI actually shows up in your customers' journey. Today, that is mostly before the purchase: researching, comparing, deciding. Rarely at the payment step itself.
Why ChatGPT no longer buys on your customer's behalf
In September 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout: a customer could buy a product without leaving the ChatGPT conversation, through the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), built with Stripe. The idea: a single-use payment token, bound to one merchant and one amount.
Six months later, in March 2026, OpenAI shut the feature down. The reasons made public:
- very few merchants had turned it on (around thirty Shopify stores, far short of the million once promised);
- product data shown in the chat (price, stock, promotions) was sometimes out of sync with the real site, causing order errors;
- at Walmart, the conversion rate inside ChatGPT was three times lower than on its own site.
Since then, ChatGPT has kept a research-and-comparison role: it presents products and sends the shopper to the merchant's site, where the order is actually placed. For a PrestaShop store, that is good news: no need to bolt on an extra AI payment system, but a real reason to be well described and well referenced by these AIs.
What is still moving forward, though
While in-chat checkout stalled on OpenAI's side, the rest of the commerce industry kept building:
- Google launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in January 2026, an open standard co-built with Shopify, Walmart, Target and others: it lets an AI agent read live price, stock and product details straight from the merchant's own site, to avoid the errors that cost ChatGPT so much.
- Payment itself is handled by a separate protocol, AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol): it governs how an agent can trigger a payment on a customer's behalf, with explicit approval at each step.
- Shopify rolled out its own payment method for AI agents, Shop Pay, by default for most of its US merchants in September 2026.
None of these standards is required or natively built into PrestaShop today. But the direction is clear: AI agents will increasingly read store product pages directly, protocol or no protocol, to answer customer questions and steer them.
What a PrestaShop store should check right now
No need to rush into a protocol that is not stable yet. What makes a store readable by an AI today is exactly what already makes it readable by Google: clean product data.
- Complete product pages: specifications, material, size, delivery time. An AI agent that cannot find a detail either guesses it or recommends a competitor who shows it.
- An up-to-date data feed: the price and stock shown must match reality in real time, not a weekly export. That is exactly what tripped up ChatGPT at unprepared merchants.
- Structured data (JSON-LD Product, with price, availability and reviews) on every product page: that is how a site "talks" directly to robots, humans or AIs.
- Visible, up-to-date customer reviews: AI agents rely on them heavily to compare, just as human shoppers do.
- A FAQ per product or category, answering concrete questions (size, care, compatibility): that is the content an AI picks up most easily to answer a customer.
None of this is a separate project: it is the same work as solid SEO, with an added benefit for AI engines. For a PrestaShop store, this is exactly what I check first in my PrestaShop services.
Should you integrate a protocol like UCP already?
Not urgently. These standards are still young (UCP turns one in January 2027), mostly limited to Shopify and the US market for now, and the first attempt at in-chat checkout (ACP/ChatGPT) just showed the risk of moving too fast. For a store, the priority stays having complete, current product data: once a solid, well-supported module brings UCP or AP2 to PrestaShop, integrating it will be that much easier if your product data is already clean.
In short: get ready, yes; rush in, no.
Not sure where your product pages stand? The fixed-price express audit lists what is missing, with a concrete, prioritised action list. If keeping stock and prices updated takes too much of your time, that is a good candidate for custom automation. Full pricing details are on the pricing page.
