Nicolas Lauwick, freelance web developer

As a freelance web developer, I build and evolve WordPress, PrestaShop and Symfony websites for freelancers, shopkeepers and small businesses. Before writing code, I spent more than fifteen years in hotels and restaurants: that is where I learned to listen to a customer, to meet deadlines and to leave nothing to chance.

From the kitchen to code

It all starts in the kitchen, at the Ferrandi school in Paris, followed by a technological baccalaureate in hospitality in Lyon and a BTS in Hospitality Marketing Management in Annecy.

I then cut my teeth in the United Kingdom, as Food & Beverage manager and then Front office manager in the Ibis hotels in Cardiff and Swindon. Back in France, I hold positions of responsibility in Poitiers, Lyon and then Paris, up to managing the front-desk team of the Ibis Gare de Lyon Diderot: schedules, recruitment, training. And already, in-house Excel tools to simplify the team’s daily work.

It is by building these tools that I develop a taste for development. In 2017, I change careers: I join Refine Agency as a developer, where I stay for seven years designing and maintaining websites on Symfony, WordPress and PrestaShop, and I complete my training with a Web Development Master’s at the IPSSI school.

DataPet, since 2018

In 2018, I launch DataPet, my freelance developer business, and I develop DataPet Manager, an online software for clubs and associations in the animal world. In parallel, I head the web department of SEO.fr from late 2023 to mid-2024: managing projects and a team, and answering calls for tender. I am now based in the Pyrénées-Orientales, in Perpignan, in the south of France.

Agency or freelancer: why two companies?

In July 2024, I co-founded Web Opteam with two partners, a web agency that I chair. I am often asked why DataPet costs less. It is a fair question: the two companies simply do not answer the same needs.

  • The agency mobilises a team (design, SEO, project management) for large-scale custom projects. That is what a team costs.
  • DataPet is me alone, on scoped services priced upfront: maintenance, PrestaShop stores, CRM and business software. No overhead, no intermediary.

If your project needs a full team, I tell you. Otherwise, you work directly with me, at a freelancer’s price.

Artificial intelligence, at the service of your projects

I use AI more and more in my work and in my clients’ work, with one conviction: it must save time, not waste it.

  • Identify repetitive tasks that can be automated, and those that must not be.
  • Integrate AI assistants and automations into your existing tools: website, CRM, back office.
  • Develop with the help of AI: faster deliveries, reviewed and mastered from end to end.

Why work with me

  • A double perspective, technical and business. I speak your language, not only developers’.
  • A sense of service inherited from hospitality: responsiveness, clarity, keeping commitments.
  • A single point of contact, from design to maintenance, and prices on display.

Working in English

I work in English as well as in French, after five years in the United Kingdom: quotes, documents and support are available in both languages, and projects run on video calls with clients across Europe and beyond.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work alone?

Yes. You talk directly to the person who designs and builds your site. For a special need (design, photos, copywriting), I bring in trusted partners.

Since when have you been a web developer?

Since 2017, after more than fifteen years in hotels and restaurants. I launched DataPet in 2018.

Why is DataPet cheaper than the Web Opteam agency?

They do not answer the same needs: the agency mobilises a team for large custom projects, while DataPet is me alone on scoped services, with no overhead.

Do you use AI to develop?

Yes, to go faster on repetitive tasks. Every line delivered is reviewed and mastered: AI assists me, it does not decide in my place.

Do you speak English?

Yes, fluently: I worked for five years in the United Kingdom.
